1984 E book 2, Chapter 1 Abstract & Analysis
Preparations for Hate Week are going on throughout London. E book three Winston and Julia have been separated and presumably taken to totally different prisons. Winston’s instincts are notoriously unreliable: he’s surprisingly drawn to ‘Brien, who becomes his tormentor and enemy, and initially suspicious of Julia, who becomes his ally. Winston smiles, and is overcome by a sense of total love and acceptance for the Party.
Winston shortly falls in love with Julia; from here, the scary bond of private loyalty is created. The Celebration seeks to keep up energy by severing private loyalties and changing them with loyalty to the celebration. Chapter Three: ‘Brien tortures Winston extra. Winston and Julia speak about politics and the Brotherhood. His wartime summary of part 1 of 1984 work for the BBC (revealed in the collections George Orwell: The Misplaced Writings, and The Battle Commentaries) gave him a strong type of bureaucratic hypocrisy and will have supplied the inspiration for his invention of « newspeak, » the reality-denying language of Large Brother’s rule in Nineteen Eighty-4.
Winston Smith’s first audacious act of dissent had been to cover from the all-seeing camera and write a diary – to compose his personal account of himself and his inside world. That is why ‘Brien thinks that the society past the suburban areas is living in a single moment, for the Occasion defines and controls this society based mostly on a class system.
